FAA Sustainable Air Traffic Control Tower Design at 100 Regional Airports

MDLE succeeded in being selected through a series of sequential design phases I, II and III and was a finalist of an open international competition to design a prototype air traffic control tower for the FAA to replace 100 aging ATCTs across the United States.  The multi-phased competition spanned over a year and included a final conceptual design for the replacement tower at Key West, Florida, Adaptability, sustainability, durability, and rapid construction techniques were all driving factors of the proposed design including a structural solution to withstand hurricane force winds.

Site Security Upgrades, Government Building

MDLE provided design and site security upgrades to a governmental client after  vehicles breached the perimeter of their building twice within a six month period, causing damage to the facade and risking the safety of the building occupants.

Planning Services for the Air Force

MDLE is providing planning services for a replacement ATCT for the Air Force.  The existing tower has been assessed for hazardous materials as well as overall building deficiencies.  Four alternative sites have been evaluated for the optimal location of the new tower, as well as calculations for the optimal AGL cab height for each of the sites.  Further development of the preferred COA will result in a 15% design including phased solutions while the new tower is under construction.

Transitional Housing Feasibility Study & Conceptual Design

MDLE believes in giving back.  When approached by a 501c(3) organization to provide feasibility and conceptual design for a transitional housing design solution for individuals impacted by hardship, the team responded.  Repurposing an existing historic building was assessed in tandem with a new construction solution.
